1001 Albums #46

The Rolling Stones cleverly titled their first album The Rolling Stones. They have been together since 1962. Almost all of the original members are still alive and touring.

The Beatles were framed in history as the good guys in white and the Rolling Stones were the bad guys in black. I think that should only go for the music, but not their life styles. It is possible that the Stones did more drugs, but who am I to judge. I was not there to see it. This version of the Stones is before my times. I had not heard any of these songs. I do like that they are doing R&B.

One song “Mona (I Need You Baby)” definitely has a connection to the 80s. The first note made me think of The Smiths’ “How Soon Is Now?” Easily, one of the best songs of the 80s and beyond. I think it is hard to make a song without having some similarity to another song. There is nothing new under the sun at this point in pop music. Everything you listen to will influence what you create.

Tell Me (You’re Coming Back)” is the only song penned by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on the album. Their talent is undeniable even in this one song. I wish I had heard it earlier, in fact, I wish I had heard this album sooner. I remembered that I was a fan of them since I first heard “Miss You” from the album Some Girls.

I should clarify something that I just learned. Nanker Phelge is listed on two of the songs as a writer. After some research I found out that that is the whole band as a collective. Weird. What do you expect from The Rolling Stones? That means that they has a hand in writing three of the songs on the album and the rest are cover songs.

After listening to The Rolling Stones I am a bigger fan. I love Jagger’s voice and the rawness of their sound. My booty is dancing in my chair, especially to “Little By Little” and “Can I Get a Witness“. The Beatles have nothing on The Rolling Stones. Besides when you sing along with Mick Jagger you get to make a pouty duck lip face and roll your head around in a circle. 9/10.
