1001 Albums #53

John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme is avant-garde jazz, free jazz, modal jazz and more jazz. It has been classified as one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Is it? Or were those critics taking drugs with The Beach Boys?

I do not get it. I like some of the jazz, but some of it I hate. I hate it when it sounds chaotic. I hate it when it sounds like the noises in my head. I can feel all this things happening all at once, then I will explode. I want to explode and be over with it all. I want my life to end. Why can’t I end it?

It starts with a bang of the gong. There is a lot of chaos, then some chanting of the title of the album. It cools down a bit. End of first song, which is over 7 minutes. Should a song be over 7 minutes if you cannot dance to it? My vote is no.

I am not sure what the overall theme of the album is, except that one critic wrote it starts with a struggle of purity and ends with acknowledgement that the musician’s talent comes from a higher power. It is his opinion.

Coltrane died about two years after this album. A church in San Francisco worship him as God incarnate. Some believe he should be made into a sainthood. Coltrane believed all religion were equal. I think someone who does heroin is not really a saint. He is just a man who played music.

I listened to it twice and nothing about it stuck out for me. I felt angrier after listening to it. I hate all the chaos. I think it is okay, especially for its talented musicians, but not for listening pleasure. 6/10.

  1. I didn’t know those things about the church in SF and his universalism. He has a very famous quote that was in the notes of this album:

“During the year 1957, I experienced, by the grace of God, a spiritual awakening which was to lead me to a richer, fuller, more productive life. At that time, in gratitude, I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music…to inspire them to realize more and more of their capacities for living meaningful lives. Because there certainly is meaning to life. I feel this has been granted through His grace. ALL PRAISE TO GOD. This album is a humble offering to Him. An attempt to say “THANK YOU GOD” through our work, even as we do in our hearts and with our tongues.”

    1. Yes, I am not surprised by much while reading about people. Yet, I remember that we only see a small part of the story. The name God seems to have so many meanings to so many people. I think these stories are almost all tragic. It is sad that so many died taking drugs or due to the effects of drugs. I am not sure how I survived it or how Keith Richards is still alive. So many mysteries.
