1001 Albums #56

Bert Jansch self-titled album Bert Jansch is one I have never heard of. I have never heard of Bert Jansch either. Perhaps it has to do with him singing folk music and being from Scotland.

I really do not know a lot about folk music, except that they all go to festivals and where old clothing from 500 A.D. England. I think they joust, say things like “Ye” and “Thou”, rarely take showers, and the women never shave under their arms or legs. I bet I am really close. If you do not believe me, then listen to “Dreams of Love“.

Everywhere I read about Jansch it states his best song was “Needle of Death” which is about his friend folk singer Buck Polly’s death. They all sound similar and resemble country music without the dying cats. But, I think “Running From Home” and “Courting Blues” are better songs. Both song give off a peaceful feeling.

If you like folk with just a guitar, then I suggest giving Jansch a chance. He had inspired many great artist, such as Elton John, Jimmy Page and Johnny Marr. I did appreciate it more after the second listen, but it is not something I would seek out. 6/10.
