1001 Albums #61

The Beach Boys again. I am starting to see trend here. Can Pet Sounds do for The Beach Boys what Revolver did for The Beatles? I hated all The Beatles music until my last review. Can The Beach Boys turn my feelings around. Pet Sounds is one of the most highly regarded albums of all-time. We shall see.

Wouldn’t It Be Nice” is creepy. I can picture this song in the opening of a film about a young couple, then suddenly at the end of the song he or she murders the other. It keeps changing the tempo and I am not sure what is going on. It is like a bunch of songs wrapped in one. It starts off sounding like an ice cream truck. It reminds me of Gwen Stefani’s “Cool” song. It feels like someone is in high school and they are experiencing their first love. That once in a lifetime feeling. I have seen it in films, but I cannot be sure I have ever felt it. I think I have had infatuations.

You Still Believe in Me” is a bit haunting to me. I can hear the influence this song has had on modern artist. It reminds me of XTC’s album Nonsuch. Musically and vocally I can hear that this album had a huge influence on XTC.

That’s Not Me” missed the mark. It is super boring. It feels like a filler song compared to the songs around it.

Don’t Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)” is a sweet love song. It feels like a continuation of the first love where everything hurts and feels great at the same time. Some of us will never feel this feeling. I feel sad that I was not created to love.

Oddly, Brian Wilson did not like his vocals on “I’m Waiting for the Day“, but it is a much better song than “That’s Not Me“. It has a happy heartbeat sound, even though it is about heartbreak. The big banging intro is great. It helps convey that feeling of being in love with someone who is in love with someone else. The waiting and hoping and wishing and it never coming to fruition. It is one of the better songs. This song would be perfect in the 80s.

Let’s Go Away for Awhile” is misplaced in my opinion. I think I would have place it after “Sloop John B“. Although, I would have deleted “Sloop John B“. It is the most “Beach Boys” song on this album. It has the sound that I hate about them.

God Only Knows” has been covered by everybody, except God and none of the ones I listened to could do it as good as The Beach Boys. Wilson was afraid to put the word God into the song. He thought it might not get played. But in the end he wanted The Beach Boys to be groundbreakers.

I Know There’s an Answer” is another one that misses the mark. I love the music. It reminds me Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound. Unfortunately, the vocals are hidden under the big sound of the music. It is not completely terrible.

I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times” feels like it was written for me. I feel that feeling every day. I feel it is time to move on because I do not belong here. Here is Colorado and here is the world. I have asked God can he make it as if I were never born. That is my ultimate desire. To never have existed.

It took me some time to figure out what they meant by the title “Pet Sounds”. It is like the feelings you have for a pet, a favourite pet. You put time into it. It is special. At least that is what I think it means. Wilson put a lot of time into this album.

“Pet Sounds” is a lot better than I anticipated. I think it is a good, except for the Beach Boys-isms and a few of songs that do not quite belong. I almost gave it an 8, but it ended on “Caroline, No” which was a terrible way to end an album. 7.5/10
