1001 Albums #70

The Rolling Stones‘ Aftermath finds the boys experimenting with many different instruments such as the sitar and the Japanese koto. Actually, let us be honest, Brian Jones was experimenting and he was the genius of the band, but Mick Jagger and Keith Richards were the songwriters. Jones could play any instrument. Does the change work?

I think the music Jones created is great. He introduced some instruments that were not known in the rock music. The problem I have with the album is the lyrics and Jagger’s shouting them. This is the first album which contained all lyrics written by Jagger and Richards. I think it was a little rough. Where is the band that had the self-titled album in 1964 that I liked so much?

The album has been critiqued harshly for it misogynist lyrically content. I would not overthink it. There are so many songs in 2019 that are far worse, but those who cry about these things are very selective in who they tear down. I look at the lyrics as a story of someone else’s journey and how they are looking at their life. Who am I to judge it? If the song “Stupid Girl” makes you angry, then perhaps you are a stupid girl and should try to learn more. Also, if you want to be angry about this song, then you should be angry about P!nk‘s “Stupid Girls“. You cannot say one is fine and the other is not.

There were two versions, a British and an American, of the album in 1966. The American album had omitted about three songs and added “Paint It, Black“. I listened to both albums and I think the American version was sort of the better one in this case. Since the book I am using prefers to rank the albums from the country of origin I will do the same.

I would listen to a few of the songs again. It is a shame that the genius of Brian Jones was not recognized. It is normal that people are overlooked in their lifetime. Jones’ life ended too early. 7/10.
