1001 Albums #75

Nina Simone. Someone I discovered a long time ago and her voice still haunts me. I have to admit that I had not heard Wild Is the Wind. She has a voice that can sing anything. If she had chosen one genre she might have been the Queen of that sound. She was better than Aretha Franklin, but never got the recognition she deserved. Some artists are too versatile for the general public.

If you have not listened to Simone, then I suggest you stop reading this garbage and do so. When she gets it right, it will pierce your heart. Her voice is the wind that uses the words as daggers. Those daggers are her weapons to make you feel all the things you have hidden deep inside for only yourself to remember.

When she gets it wrong is when she writes her own tunes. In the song “Four Women” it starts fine, but by the end it seems overly dramatic with the ending line “My name is PEACHES”. The song does not really tell me anything that makes me care about the four women. Who is Peaches? I like to eat peaches, but I prefer watermelon or blueberries.

The only other song that I really feel no connection to is “Break Down and Let It All Out“. It is too strange. This song is why artists need people to pull them back when they are on the brink of insanity.

I hope Nina Simone has another album on the list. I recommend listening to “Feeling Good”, “I Loves You, Porgy” and “My Baby Just Cares For Me”. Those are just a few of her great songs. Wild Is the Wind is worth listening to if you have never heard her. 8.5/10
