1001 Albums #78

The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is not an album I was looking forward to listening to even though the previous album Revolver showed some potential. Hopefully, the trend of featuring one of the members on a song continues. I hated their voices as one on the previous albums. The title of the album is great. It sounds depressing.

I have heard the first song “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” in passing, but I never paid attention to it. It is a great way to open the show. Paul McCartney knows how to bring the excitement to music unlike John Lennon who was bit boring to me in his solo career.

And we segue into the perfectly written tune “With a Little Help from My Friends” sung out of tune by Ringo Starr. I like the way his friends cheer Starr into singing. It is great that he is not a perfect singer. I can attest that no friendship is perfect. All mine have been screwed up. I trust someone, then they screw me over. I am the one who gives too much. Males do not make true friends. I guess I should clarify that this comment is to my friendships with males. Women tend to be kinder friends in general. They like to talk about things. They are not usually trying to hurt people. Maybe I should not generalise people, but this is about my experience. Men like to pick off the weaker people to rule over.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” is a surprise for me because I thought it was an Elton John song. Their version is okay, but Elton John owned it. His version is much better. The imaginary of the song is fantastical, but I feel the song does not have a complete plot or ending. It goes on a trip and then ends. Maybe that is how L.S.D. works.

The best version.

The rest of Side A is better than their other albums, but the songs are different from the first three. They are a bit slower, mellower, except the last song. For this reason alone I feel the album to be uneven. I want more of the weirdness. I want more fantastical imaginative music. I want to go on this bizarre trip and stay for a long time. Unfortunately, I go in and out of it. It is not keeping me on the whole journey. Is that what L.S.D. is like?

You can always tell George Harrison is singing a song. It has some weird sitar music. That is why he was never great as a solo artist. Side B starts off with Harrison singing “Within You Without You” a trippy song that definitely fits the album.

I do not hate the McCartney tunes that follow, but I cannot wait for him to go solo. He is far better with Wings. “Lovely Rita” has great music that fits the theme I have built in my head, but the lyrics are lacking.

It gets worse with John Lennon’s song “Good Morning Good Morning”. It is a silly ditty. Fortunately, he and McCartney redeem themselves on the last song “A Day in the Life“. It is a glorious ending to a great album.

As I have stated the album is great, but in parts. I believe they did not want to go too trippy for the general public. I want more trippy music. Perhaps, they were thinking they would create a little something for everyone. 8.5/10.
