#136 Neil Young with Crazy Horse – Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is Neil Young‘s second studio album and his first with his backing band Crazy Horse. I am aware of Young because I do know one of his songs “Harvest Moon“, which was popular in the early 90s. It is a really beautiful song with melancholy music to fit his lyrics

“Because I’m still in love with you
I want to see you dance again
Because I’m still in love with you
On this harvest moon.”

As for this album, I have never heard any of these songs. It does not start off great for me. “Cinnamon Girl” does not do anything for the album. It is reminiscent of songs that will come later in history, but I do not care about cinnamon enough as a spice to want to hear about it in a song. It has been covered quite a few times.

Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere” has a sort of country twang to it, but not enough to make it terrible. I like the feeling it evokes in my memory. I want to go back home to Budapest to get that feeling back that I left there. Unfortunately, everything is different and I will never feel that way again. The days ahead are all about waiting for death to take me. I will never have a home again.

“Every time I think about
back home
It’s cool and breezy
I wish that I could be there
right now
Just passing time”.

Round & Round (It Won’t Be Long)” is another beautiful song. Young knows how to make music and lyrics that can tear a hole in your already broken heart.

The next song “Down by the River is a song about someone murdering their lover. Musically and lyrically I really like the song, but the overly long interlude of music carries on too long. By the four minute mark I am saying come on just fade out. I would love the radio edit of this song. I blame MTV for my impatience.

The second side is not as strong as the first, but that does not mean it is terrible. It is only three songs and one of them is over 10 minutes. I hate overly long songs, but “Cowgirl in the Sand” displays the talent of Crazy Horse as a band. I just wish he had edited it down a little and by little I mean five minutes.

This is a really good album that you will not have to skip every other song. I was able to listen to it a couple times without skipping any of the songs. My only complaint is it has so few songs and two overly long songs. 7.5/10.
