The Beatles are back again. This time with the last album that they recorded together as a band. They would break up the following year. The album cover for Abbey Road is famous because it spawned a theory that Paul McCartney had died and the guy in the photo is an imposter.
The first song on the album was an attempt of Lennon’s to write a campaign song for Timothy Leary. “Come Together” was that song, but it was not used because Leary went to prison for possession of marijuana. I was a big fan of Michael Jackson’s version. This version is good too.
The song that makes this album great is “Something” written and sung by George Harrison. “Something” proves that Harrison has grown to be a great songwriter and if The Beatles had continued they would have had to increase the amount of songs he wrote per album.
McCartney has the next two songs, but this is the first album where I think he did not make a radio friendly hit. “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer” and “Oh! Darling” are good songs. I think the funniest thing is that Lennon thought that McCartney wrote a great song, but he did not sing it well and Lennon should have sung it. That is laughable, since Lennon’s voice is not as good.
The album descends quickly with Ringo Starr’s “Octopus’s Garden” and Lennon’s “I Want You (She’s So Heavy)“. I actually think the latter song is the worst of the two and maybe the worst on the album. Usually I would say that Starr has the worst song.
Luckily, Harrison saves the album with his second offering “Here Comes the Sun“. Unfortunately, it is followed by Lennon’s underwhelming “Because”.
McCartney returns the course of the album with the song “You Never Give Me Your Money“. He stated the song is about no faith in a person. I know how that feels. I do not have faith in people. They will take everything and leave you after you are empty.
I am not a fan of John Lennon’s songs or his voice, but “Sun King” is a smooth song. I think the three vocals work together on this song. The best part of it is the music. It sounds heavenly.
The rest of side two is a suite of songs that were leftovers from the White Album and Get Back / Let It Be recording. McCartney had the idea to make the demos into a suite. I would like to hear some of the songs in full, but it is lovely as it is on the album.
I think the is the best album so far in The Beatles catalogue. Harrison had two great songs which propelled the album’s reachability to the public by providing some radio hits. If McCartney had a song that was a hit on here the album would have been amazing. 8.5/10.
