From Elvis in Memphis is part of Elvis Presley’s return to the top after a few years of being a joke amongst “real” music fans and even his own fans were no longer loyal. In 1968, he had the great comeback Elvis on NBC, it aired at the end 1968. The King had returned.
His voice is the first thing you hear as the album opens. He is on fire. Elvis kicks it into gear with a rock and roll tune “Wearin’ That Loved-On Look“.
“Only the Strong Survive” is my favourite Presley song on the album. He does his talking thing in the beginning of the song, then he uses his soulful voice to sing the lyrics.
Presley turns country song “Long Black Limousine” into a R&B gospel tune and it is good.
I think there is not a need to waste time going through every song for you. I would say the album is his masterpiece. There is a country song that I would have rather he skipped, but nobody puts Presley in a corner. He can do country and make it sound good. I watched some of his performances from 1968/69 and he was lit.
My other favourite tunes are “Gentle On My Mind“, “In The Ghetto” and “Any Day Now“. He knows how to put passion in his vocals and how to play with the sound to make the feeling more effective for the listener. “In The Ghetto” gives me the chills.
“Suspicious Minds” is the best song from Presley and one of the best songs ever. It was recorded for the same sessions as the album, but it was not added until the cd reissue. Years later the Fine Young Cannibals recorded an excellent version only second to Elvis Presley’s version. The lyrics are about jealousy in a relationship,
With suspicious minds (suspicious minds)
And we can’t build our dreams
On suspicious minds
Or dry the tears from your eyes
Let’s don’t let a good thing die
When, honey, you know
I’ve never lied to you
Mmm, yeah, yeah
I can’t walk out
Because I love you too much, baby”.
