160 Sly and the Family Stone – Stand!

Sly and the Family Stone‘s Stand! is highly rated. I am not so sure it deserves it. Some of the songs rely on repetition of lyrics, especially provocative lyrics. Provocative is great, but it needs a leg to stand on to move the audience into a lasting movement.

The album does not begin until the third song “I Want to Take You Higher” for me. Actually, this album sounds dated to me. I know all these albums from the 60s are dated but this one seems to not wear the years well. The only other song that I like is “Everyday People“. Joan Jett’s version is great too. Over 13 minutes is spent on one long song that sounds the same all the way throughout the entire song.

The album was quite boring for me. I had high expectations, but this was a huge letdown. The band is extremely talented, unfortunately it is short-lived on this album. The Temptations did a better job of copying their sound than they did themselves. 5/10.

Not necessarily better. Just different. I like both versions.

Ike & Tina cover “I Want to Take You Higher” which was on fire. Again, both versions are great.
