#166 Isaac Hayes – Hot Buttered Soul

Hot Buttered Soul is Isaac Hayes second album. He was never going to record another album after the failure of his first album, but he was convinced to do make this one. This is a landmark album in soul music.

This will probably be a short review since Hayes’ album is extremely short. I noticed it is a thing with him. He puts four long songs on his album and one of the songs is him talking for almost nine minutes on a nineteen minute song. He loves to talk. If I wanted to hear someone talk I would listen to talk radio or a podcast or one of my friends who likes to talk about themselves.

“Walk On By” is Hayes’ version of Dionne Warwick‘s song she recorded 1963. Her version is the iconic version, but his version is another animal. Hayes makes this song his woman. He knows how to take a “white” song and slap some hot buttered soul into it and make it dirty.

“Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic” is a long title and i have no idea what it means, but I like the music. It is dripping with soul. As I mentioned before, I hate long songs, but I do not mind Hayes’ overly long ones. He is getting down. This is the only song on this album he co-wrote.

Now that he has you hot from getting down and funky he takes the tempo way down and sings “One Woman“. As sweet as the title sounds, it is misleading because he is unfaithful to the woman at home. The really bad part of it is that he blames the other women on making him do wrong. Get a life buddy. That will not fly in this politically correct generation of today. They will not know what to do with this album.

By the Time I Get to Phoenix” is the last song where he talks too much. Way too much. But once the actual songs begins it is smooth sailing.

I actually liked the whole album after listening to it a second and third time. I hate the talking, but Hayes knows how to make music. Sexy sweet music. 8/10.
