Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs was from Derek And The Dominos a new band from Eric Clapton after he left Blind Faith and a host of other groups. He was in a lot of bands in the 60s. If he was a woman they would say he gets around a lot. This is the only album the group made and it is considered the defining moment in Clapton’s career. The band was plagued with troubles from the beginning, especially Clapton’s reason for calling himself Derek and the real story of Layla. He was in love with somebody else’s wife. Guitarist Duane Allman died from a motorcycle accident in 1971. The worst of the troubles came years later when drummer Jim Gordon killed his mother with a hammer. Maybe he heard the song “U Can’t Touch This” and he got the idea. This sounds like a film that should be make.
Songs that grabbed my attention were “Bell Bottom Blues” “Anyday“, “Thorn Tree in the Garden” and to a lesser degree “Layla“. Everyone is probably freaking out now. “How can you not love Layla? Clam down. It will all be okay. I like the ending part with just the music more than the signing. It sounds like he is harshly screaming. The music is great.
While I enjoyed the music for the most part, I did not find the songs all that catchy. I did not care for them. Clapton is a better musician than he is a singer. I think the band is extremely talented, but it is not my cup of coffee. 6/10.
