#188 Deep Purple – Deep Purple in Rock

I have definitely never heard any of Deep Purple in Rock. I would venture to say I have never heard any of Deep Purple‘s music. As I have stated previously, I was never a real rocker. My taste in rock music came from my mother’s choices and a few rocker friends. It seems the trend in the book has switched to hard rock and heavy metal.

For me, the album cover is one of the worst in the history of album covers. They should sue the designer. My other problem with the album is a few of the songs are too long. I hate the same sound for an extended period of time.

As for the music, it is heavy metal and hard rock in the vein of Led Zeppelin. These guys took lessons for Zeppelin. They lack four things that Led Zeppelin has: Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones. Deep Purple’s singer Ian Gillan is not as great as Plant vocally.

None of the songs stuck out enough for me to want them on my list of songs. The album is good, the musicians are good, but the vocals are weak for me. 6/10.
