I did not expect Morrissey to return to the list in the 2000s, but here we are. I remember 2004s You Are the Quarry from Morrissey. I actually remember liking it. It was Morrissey’s first album in seven years. Many considered it a return for Morrissey after his last album Maladjusted disappointed fans and critics.
The best songs on the album are “Let Me Kiss You”, “I’m Not Sorry“, “All the Lazy Dykes”, “First of the Gang to Die”, “Come Back to Camden”, and actually all of the songs.
Well, except for “I Have Forgiven Jesus“. I actually like the sound of the song, but I think the theme of forgiving Jesus is a bit retarded. What did Jesus do to us today? I understand the questions that Morrissey has for Jesus. I have asked those same questions. But I do not find answers. I have spent years searching for answers, but the church today does not offer any. You cannot depend on people to guide and love you enough to stick by you. We have to do it alone.
Why did you stick in self deprecating bones and skin? Do you hate me?
But Jesus hurt me, When he deserted me, but, I have forgiven you Jesus For all of the love, You placed in me when there's no one I can turn to with this love Monday - humiliation, Tuesday - suffocation, Wednesday - condescension, Thursday - is pathetic By Friday life has killed me, By Friday life has killed me, Oh pretty one, Oh pretty one Why did you give me so much desire, When there is nowhere I can go to offload this desire? And why did you give me so much love in a loveless world, When there is no one I can turn to To unlock all this love? And why did you stick in self deprecating bones and skin?, Jesus do you hate me? Why did you stick in self deprecating bones and skin? Do you hate me?, Do you hate me?, Do you hate me?, Do you hate me?, Do you hate me?
Overall, this is a great return to the Morrissey I grew up with. You can say many things about him, but you cannot say his is a terrible songwriter. His lyrics have always spoken to me. His voice is still beautiful to me. I have not listened to his newer albums, but now I will have to because I am curious to see how he has progressed over the years. I often forget my favourite singers over the years, sort of like my friends forget me. 10/10.
