1001 Albums #27

I have heard of The Everly Brothers, but not really any of their music, except maybe “Cathy’s Clown” their biggest hit. The good thing about their album A Date with the Everly Brothers is that it is a short date. All of the songs are under three minutes.

The Bee Gees, Oasis, The Carpenters, The Jackson 5, and there are many more siblings who share the stage. There seems to be a magic in harmonies that only siblings can share. Perhaps deep down most of them want each other to do their best, except for the Gallagher Brothers. The Everly Brothers sound perfect together.

I wonder what it would had been like if I had siblings that I was close to as a child. Would we have wanted to see each other be successful? Of course not as singers. My shower does not like my singing. I was kicked out. I have sisters, but we are not close. I have one sister that I feel more of a connection with in recent times, but I think we do not know each other very well. Actually, no one knows me very well. I am not an easy person to know.

I will look at two albums because the book 1001 Albums listed A Date with the Everly Brothers as the best, but many critics claim It’s Everly Time is their best. I accidentally started listening to the latter album so I will decide which is better for me.

The clear winner is A Date with the Everly Brothers.I think the reason is that I prefer the songs they wrote for themselves and it contains more of them than It’s Everly Time. In fact, they only wrote one song “So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)” on it. It is the only song that I liked a lot on that album.

I did not know they sang “Love Hurts” first. It was written for them.

A Date with the Everly Brothers is a solid album. It has better lyrics than the rock and roll of the 50s and they do sound great together. Would I listen to it again? Yes. It is a really good album. I love harmonies and sadness in music. 7/10
